The significance of this 1,000-day streak goes beyond the conjugations, vocabulary and the twists and turns of learning a new language.
When I started using the Duolingo app, I saw this message popup: “those who reach a streak of 7 days are 3.6 times more likely to complete their course.” So, at that time, I decided why not try this for 7 days. And then I got hooked.
The app is addictive due to its gamification method. But because it is a conduit of knowledge, I don’t mind. I’ve maintained my French knowledge and tried two other languages.
By the time I struck 1 year, I thought about the factors that made me consistent with Duolingo and decided to apply those principles in the other areas of my life that craved consistency.
How to maintain a 1,000-day streak
So here they are:
1. You need a visual reminder. At first, I relied on the app notification to remind me to do my daily practice. Now, even when my notifications are turned off, I usually remember.
2. There is a streak. Duolingo keeps track of how long you’ve maintained your streak. And I don’t want to loose my streak, so I keep on. If you are trying to maintain a habit, there are several calendars that mimick this. Print a calendar and write the habit you want to learn. And each day you are consistent, circle it.
3. Initially, I used to (not anymore) batch my learning with my breakfast. Stacking a new habit with an old habit promotes consistency. (Idea from the book “Atomic habits”)
4. It takes just 5 minutes to complete a learning, which is what it takes me most days. If you’re building a habit, start with just 5 mins a day. Don’t try to go the whole length. Just start small.
Motivation is a myth. You won’t always be motivated to carry on. Ask those who workout consistently.
Don’t rely on willpower. Create a system that helps you go on autopilot.
5. Consistency is not a straight line. It’s a graph trending upwards with small kinks.
Even if you miss a day, come back stronger and keep at it.
P.S. I would like to learn one of the sino-tibetan languages.
P.P.S Duolingo is an excellent starting point for learning languages, but if you want to master a language, you need a practice partner and possibly a teacher.
Also practise writing in your diary or your shopping list in another language.
It’s a new year and a good time to pick up a new habit.
What habit are you looking to be consistent in in 2024?
Congratulations, that’s amazing. I’m on Duolingo too and I very much agree with your advice. Especially about putting a reminder, I always add it to my schedule otherwise I’d forget.
